Wildfire SNAP benefits extended

(Stock photo by hapabapa/Getty Images) Northern Nevada residents who lost food purchased with Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits due to the Bug, Fred, Stallion or Hawk fires or related power outages can request replacement benefits through September 7, 2026.

Four major fires in the last month have burned through more than 100,000 acres in Northern Nevada, prompting the evacuation of thousands of residents and the breakdown of major infrastructure.

The U.S. The Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service approved an extension to allow those affected by the fires to report their losses and receive replacement SNAP benefits beyond the standard 10 days.

Each request will be reviewed to determine eligibility and, if eligible, the amount of replacement benefits that may be provided, according to the Nevada Division of Social Services.

SNAP recipients affected by the fires or related power outages can report their food loss by visiting a local DSS office or calling (775) 684-7200.

The Nevada Division of Social Services said they are also pursuing options to support households affected by the Oxley-McConnell fires as they await federal approval for a SNAP extension.

“DSS understands the profound impact these fires have had on individuals, families, and communities across Nevada. We recognize that losing food and other essential resources can add to the stress and uncertainty families are already experiencing. DSS is committed to standing with affected households and helping them access available resources and assistance as they recover and move forward,” said Kristle Muessle, a public information officer with DSS.

The White House issued a presidential emergency declaration for Nevada following the Hawk Fire impacting northwest Reno on Wednesday.

The emergency declaration seeks immediate federal assistance to protect public health and safety, as well as to maintain essential services and support communities still recovering from the Hawk Fire.
