MOORHEAD — A question on the November ballot could mean millions of dollars in additional funding for Minnesota schools.
A bipartisan measure would increase annual distributions from the state's Permanent School Fund use from up to 2.5% to 4.5%.
The fund was created in 1858 and draws revenue from timber sales and mining on public lands. It provides additional funding for schools without costing taxpayers.
During the 2025-26 school year, the Moorhead School District received more than $550,000 from the fund, according to the Minnesota Department of Education.
Sen. Rob Kupec, DFL-Moorhead, says the proposed change, if approved by voters, would increase Moorhead's funding by nearly $250,000.
The general election is Nov. 3.
Kupec says not voting on the measure will be treated as a "no" vote.
