“Labor Day is a time for families across Louisiana to enjoy the outdoors, and we want the memories of holiday weekends to be good ones, not overshadowed by preventable tragedies,” Louisiana Department of Health Secretary Bruce Greenstein said in a news release. “Simple steps can save lives and help ensure a safe and enjoyable holiday weekend.”
Officials also recommend putting physical barriers around swimming pools.
Rebecca Harris, secretary of the Department of Children and Family Services, said in a news release Friday that her nephew, Nathan Landry, was a drowning victim.
“I know all too well the dangers of the water. I don’t want another family to experience that kind of loss,” Harris said in a news release. “So please, Louisiana, get a swim plan — whether that means getting your children into lessons now or making a plan for next summer.”
Officials also urged the public to practice water safety at home as well as in lakes, bayous and ponds. Even bathtubs present risks, they said.
“Water safety doesn’t end at the pool,” DCFS Chief Medical Officer Dr. Rebecca Hook. “Water safety is any time your children or your family is in or on the water.”
Heat risks are increased for children, the elderly and anyone who has to spend extended time outdoors. Those same risks exist on the water, according to state officials
Staying hydrated throughout the day, limiting time outside from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and seeking shade whenever possible reduces the chance of heat-related illnesses.
