A RESOLUTION
Recognizing June 15, 2026, as "World Elder Abuse Awareness Day"
in Pennsylvania.
WHEREAS, "World Elder Abuse Awareness Day" is observed to
raise awareness about the forms and causes of elder abuse,
highlight the impact it has on older adults and reinforce the
shared responsibility to safeguard the well-being of older
Pennsylvanians; and
WHEREAS, Over the last five years, the Department of Aging
has recorded an 84% increase in "Reports of Need"; and
WHEREAS, In fiscal year 2024-2025, there were 66,719 reports
of need Statewide, which is a 14% increase from the previous
fiscal year; and
WHEREAS, The most common substantiated allegations of abuse
include self-neglect, caregiver neglect, financial exploitation,
emotional abuse and physical abuse; and
WHEREAS, Half of the victims in fiscal year 2024-2025 lived
alone, placing them at greater risk of social isolation and
related poor health outcomes; and
WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is home to more than 3.5 million adults
60 years of age and older, representing nearly 30% of the
Commonwealth's population; and
WHEREAS, Financial exploitation continues to grow at an
alarming rate, often affecting older adults who may be
experiencing cognitive decline and therefore have increased
difficulty recognizing or responding to irregular or suspicious
financial activity; and
WHEREAS, Emotional and physical abuse continue to be serious
issues, contributing to diminishing quality of life and
increased vulnerability, and can have lasting impacts on the
families of older adults; and
WHEREAS, "World Elder Abuse Awareness Day" provides an
opportunity to reflect upon and commit to utilizing every tool
and resource available to ensure that Pennsylvania's older
adults can live with confidence, dignity and peace of mind
knowing some of their most vulnerable years are free from fear,
hurt and harm; therefore be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize June 15, 2026, as "World
Elder Abuse Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.
