                                11   REQUESTING THAT THE GOVERNOR DESIGNATE THE MONTH OF MAY 2026 AS
                                12   "BETTER HEARING AND SPEECH MONTH".

                                14        WHEREAS, more than fourteen million Americans suffer
                                15   speech, language and hearing impairments that can limit
                                16   academic achievement, career advancement and social adjustment

                                17   for those who do not receive effective treatment; and

                                18        WHEREAS, these communication disorders can be present at
                                19   birth or can be caused through accidental injury or illness at
                                20   any age; and
                                21        WHEREAS, one in ten New Mexico families is affected by
                                22   communication disorders; and
                                23        WHEREAS, those affected deserve access to quality
                                24   treatment and every opportunity to lead full and productive
                                25   lives; and

                                1  WHEREAS, with the help of dedicated and skilled
                                2    professionals, most people with speech, language and hearing
                                3    problems can find treatment and learn strategies to help them
                                4    cope, live more independently and achieve their potential; and
                                5  WHEREAS, speech-language pathologists and audiologists
                                6    treat all types of speech, language and related disorders and
                                7    work in a wide variety of health and education settings to help
                                8    improve the quality of treatment and increase the opportunities
                                9    for people with speech, language and hearing problems to lead
                                10   full and productive lives;
                                11        NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
                                12   REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that the governor be
                                13   requested to designate the month of May 2026 as "Better Hearing
                                14   and Speech Month" in New Mexico; and
                                15        BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that copies of this memorial be
                                16   transmitted to the governor and the New Mexico speech-language
