4 SJR___ CELEBRATING THE LIFE AND MOURNING THE DEATH OF
5 DOROTHY LEE HATCHER.

7WHEREAS, with an overwhelming sense of loss, we mourn
8 the death, yet celebrate the life, of Dorothy Lee "Dot"
9 Hatcher of Montgomery, Alabama, whose passing on December
10 23, 2025, at 83 years of age, has left a void in the lives
11 of her family and friends; and
12WHEREAS, a devoted mother, friend, seamstress, and
13 community leader, Ms. Hatcher was known for her unfailing
14 work ethic, loving spirit, and consistent active desire to
15 serve others; she was the beloved mother of our good friend
16 and colleague, Senator Kirk Hatcher; and
17WHEREAS, Dot Hatcher was born on November 4, 1942, in
18 Montgomery, Alabama, to Rochelle Nichols, Sr. and Lilly
19 Hatcher; upon the early death of her mother, she received a
20 lifetime of devoted care from her aunt, Nellie Hatcher Lee,
21 and her husband, John Arthur Lee, both of whom she was
22 blessed to call her beloved parents; and
23WHEREAS, she matriculated through the Montgomery
24 Public School system before pursuing studies in tailoring
25 and commercial sewing; this training led to a career
26 spanning more than six decades as a master tailor and
27 seamstress; and
28WHEREAS, one of her greatest achievements was

29 fulfilling her dream of owning and operating her own tailor
30 and dress shop; Custom Creations was her pride and joy, and
31 all who visited her shop found not only expert apparel
32 fitting, but also love and kindness; her remarkable talent
33 and dedication earned her wide recognition as one of the
34 city's most gifted seamstresses; and
35WHEREAS, at the tender age of eight, she united with
36 Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church and was baptized under the
37 pastorate of the late Reverend George W. Temple; blessed
38 with a beautiful alto voice, she was often heard singing
39 lead vocals in both the PRBC Senior Choir and the Gospel
40 Chorus; of the many songs she led in Senior Choir, "You
41 Brought Me from a Mighty Long Way" was the most requested;
42 and
43WHEREAS, she leaves to faithfully cherish her
44 memories her lovingly devoted son, Lycurgus "Kirk" Hatcher;
45 daughter, Katrina Cleveland (Adam); sisters, Yolanda E. Lee,
46 Diane Jones, Annie P. Massenberg, and Johnnie Ruth Williams;
47 brother, Larry Nichols (Doris); sisters-in-law, Shirley J.
48 Nichols and Cynthia Nichols; grandchildren, Aedan Cleveland,
49 Ardan Cleveland, and Adalynn Cleveland; special
50 great-nephew, Keyon Nichols; and a host of loving nieces,
51 nephews, extended family members, and longtime neighbors and
52 treasured friends; and
53WHEREAS, a valued member of the community and loved
54 by many, her service to others and her passion for life will
55 be remembered fondly; we join with others to celebrate her
56 life and to mourn her death; although her presence will be

57 deeply missed, her memory will be forever cherished in the
58 hearts and minds of those who were fortunate to have known
59 her; and
60WHEREAS, her family can take comfort in knowing that
61 she is now with the God she talked and sang about, loved,
62 and faithfully served; now therefore,
63BE IT RESOLVED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF ALABAMA, BOTH
64 HOUSES THEREOF CONCURRING, That the death of Ms. Dorothy Lee
65 "Dot" Hatcher is recorded with deep sadness, and even as we
66 mourn her passing and the loss it represents, we also
67 celebrate her life; this resolution is offered in highest
68 tribute, along with heartfelt sympathy to her family, whose
69 grief is shared by many.
