WILLIAMS, DOUGHERTY, CIRESIAND PASHINSKI, MAY 11, 2026REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON APPROPRIATIONS, MAY 12, 2026A RESOLUTION1 Recognizing June 2, 2026, as "Cancer Action Day" in2 Pennsylvania.3 WHEREAS, The risk of dying from cancer has steadily declined4 over the last 30 years, largely because of smoking cessation,5 early cancer detection, advances in the treatment of cancer and6 precision medicine; and7 WHEREAS, Advances have not benefited everyone equally, and in8 2026, the American Cancer Society estimates there will be more9 than 2 million new cases of cancer in the United States, with10 cancer incidence rates increasing for women under 50 years of11 age; and12 WHEREAS, More than 625,000 people will lose their lives to13 cancer in 2026; and14 WHEREAS, This Commonwealth's cancer incidence and mortality15 rates continue to outpace the national rates, with a predicted16 90,250 Pennsylvanians to face a new cancer diagnosis in 2026 and1 an estimated 27,600 Commonwealth residents to lose their fight2 against cancer this year; and3 WHEREAS, In this Commonwealth, the five most common new cases4 of cancer in 2026 will include breast cancer at 13,720, prostate5 cancer at 13,470, lung and bronchus cancer at 10,710, colorectal6 cancer at 6,520 and urinary bladder cancer at 4,160; and7 WHEREAS, Many of these cancers are often preventable and8 early detection and treatment are critical as cancer does not9 always cause symptoms with many cancers occurring in people with10 no family history; and11 WHEREAS, All Pennsylvanians do not have equitable access to12 cancer prevention, detection, treatment and survivorship13 services, which results in a disproportionate cancer burden for14 communities of color and rural, LGBTQ and economically insecure15 Pennsylvanians; and16 WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network17 volunteers will gather at the Pennsylvania Capitol on June 2,18 2026, for "Cancer Action Day," in coalition with allied partners19 to advance legislative priorities that increase Pennsylvanians'20 access to quality health care and cancer prevention services;21 therefore be it22 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives recognize June 2,23 2026, as "Cancer Action Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it further24 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives identify the25 burden of cancer and urge the advancement of legislation in26 support of cancer prevention, detection and treatment throughout27 this Commonwealth; and be it further28 RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives honor all29 Pennsylvanians impacted by cancer and those who devote their30 lives to fighting this disease.20260HR0524PN3394 - 2 -
