hr470/introduced.txtPRINTER'S NO. 3151THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF PENNSYLVANIAHOUSE RESOLUTIONNo. 470Session of2026INTRODUCED BY KRUEGER, HILL-EVANS, VENKAT, McNEILL, HOHENSTEIN,FREEMAN, RIVERA, SANCHEZ, NEILSON AND PASHINSKI,APRIL 7, 2026REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON HEALTH, APRIL 8, 2026A RESOLUTION1 Designating May 15, 2026, as "Prader Willi Syndrome Awareness2 Day" in Pennsylvania.3 WHEREAS, Prader Willi Syndrome (PWS) is a rare and complex4 genetic disorder that affects multiple systems of the body and5 requires lifelong medical care, specialized support and strong6 community understanding; and7 WHEREAS, This syndrome impacts more than 30 million citizens8 of the United States; and9 WHEREAS, One of the hallmark symptoms of the syndrome is10 hyperphagia, which means that individuals with PWS never feel11 full after eating, which often leads to obesity and12 complications from obesity; and13 WHEREAS, Other common symptoms include poor muscle tone,14 distinct facial features, poor sucking reflex, behavioral15 problems and cognitive impairment; and16 WHEREAS, Raising awareness is essential to improving early17 diagnosis, access to appropriate care and the overall quality of1 life for individuals and families impacted by PWS; and2WHEREAS, Regularly attending well-baby doctor's appointments3 may help identify the syndrome earlier and lead to early4 intervention to help the family navigate the complexity of PWS;5 and6WHEREAS, Individuals can be carriers of PWS, meaning that the7 individual may not show symptoms while the chromosomal8 abnormality can be passed to the individual's children without9 knowing of the risk; and10WHEREAS, May is recognized as Prader Willi Syndrome Awareness11 Month each year to raise awareness and demonstrate support for12 those in our communities who are suffering from the syndrome;13 and14WHEREAS, This year is especially meaningful, as we celebrate15 the formation of the Prader-Willi Alliance of Pennsylvania, a16 newly established nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting17 individuals with PWS and their families through education,18 advocacy and connection across this Commonwealth; and19WHEREAS, The organization is committed to working alongside20 families, health care providers, educators and policymakers to21 ensure equitable access to services and informed care; therefore22 be it23RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives designate May 15,24 2026, as "Prader Willi Syndrome Awareness Day" in Pennsylvania.20260HR0470PN3151 - 2 -
