PRESIDENT:I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:1 A SENATE RESOLUTION urging the Indiana General2 Assembly to study training requirements for school employees3 concerning seizures.4 Whereas, Seizures, including those caused by the disease5 epilepsy, are a common neurological condition affecting6 roughly 1 in 100 children, making it critical for school staff to7 recognize seizures, provide first aid, and ensure student safety;8 Whereas, Trained school staff can recognize various types9 of seizures (not just convulsions), administer rescue10 medications, and know exactly when to call 911, which can be11 lifesaving;12 Whereas, Training ensures staff can follow individualized,13 doctor-approved plans that outline a student's specific seizure14 triggers, typical seizure appearance, and necessary emergency15 procedures;16 Whereas, Educating staff helps eliminate myths about17 epilepsy (e.g., that a person can swallow their tongue) and18 fosters a more understanding, inclusive environment for19 students with epilepsy;2026 DR 3847/DI aj21 Whereas, Studies show that medical training for staff2 boosts their confidence in managing emergencies, reducing3 panic and allowing for swift, effective action;4 Whereas, In many areas, providing a safe environment for5 students with chronic conditions is considered both a legal6 requirement and a moral obligation; and7 Whereas, Proper training enables personnel to follow8 seizure action plans, administer rescue medications, reduce9 stigma, and create a supportive, inclusive, and safe10 environment for students to learn: Therefore,11Be it resolved by the Senate of the12General Assembly of the State of Indiana:13 SECTION 1. That the Indiana State Senate is urged to study14 training requirements for school employees concerning15 seizures.1617 SECTION 2. That the Secretary of the Senate is directed to18 transmit a copy of this Resolution to Senator David Niezgodski.2026 DR 3847/DI aj
