2  DECLARING FEBRUARY 4, 2026 "UNM DAY" IN THE HOUSE OF
3  REPRESENTATIVES.

5WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico was founded in
6  1889 and is the state's flagship university; and
7WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico currently serves
8  more than twenty-eight thousand students across all of its
9  campuses and employs tens of thousands of New Mexico
10 residents, including employees of the university of New
11 Mexico hospital; and
12      WHEREAS, in 2025, more than five thousand students
13 received degrees from the university of New Mexico's main and
14 branch campuses, including approximately three thousand four
15 hundred bachelor's degrees, more than nine hundred master's
16 degrees, one hundred eight juris doctorates and ninety-seven
17 medical doctorates; and
18      WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico awarded more than
19 one hundred ninety-one million dollars ($191,000,000) in
20 scholarships in the 2024-2025 academic year; and
21      WHEREAS, there are more than two hundred thousand active
22 alumni, with lobos in every state, including one hundred
23 twenty-four thousand in New Mexico; and
24      WHEREAS, since 1996, the university of New Mexico has
25 disclosed two thousand six hundred sixty-one new inventions     HM 49

1  and filed one thousand nine hundred thirty-five patent
2  applications, and in 2024, the last full year of reporting,
3  the university of New Mexico filed for seventy patents, with
4  thirty-three patents issued; and
5WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico health sciences
6  center is the state's largest integrated health care
7  treatment, research and educational organization, with
8  national recognition for primary care, rural medicine, family
9  medicine, nursing and midwifery, and is home to the state's
10 only national-cancer-institute-designated comprehensive
11 cancer center; and
12      WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico hospital is the
13 only level one trauma center for the state and sees
14 approximately one million patient visits per year; and
15      WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico, as the state of
16 New Mexico's premier Carnegie-designated "Research 1"
17 institution, provides a research-driven education where
18 faculty members engage in investigation and scholarship that
19 create new knowledge, which brings sustained wealth to New
20 Mexico's economy; and
21      WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico is a community of
22 unique perspectives that embraces peoples' differences and
23 celebrates a culture of contrast rather than a contrast of
24 cultures; and
25      WHEREAS, the university of New Mexico is the university    HM 49

1  for New Mexico;
2NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE HOUSE OF
3  REPRESENTATIVES OF THE STATE OF NEW MEXICO that February 4,
4  2026 be declared "UNM Day" in the house of representatives in
5  recognition of the university of New Mexico's service and
6  dedication to the residents of New Mexico; and
7BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this memorial be
8  transmitted to the president of the university of New Mexico.   HM 49
