2A resolution recognizing and commending Moffitt Cancer
3Center on the occasion of its 40th anniversary.

5WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center was created by the
6Legislature in 1981, construction of the center began in Tampa
7in 1983, and Moffitt opened its doors in October 1986, and
8WHEREAS, in 2001, Moffitt Cancer Center was the first such
9facility in Florida to earn the prestigious National Cancer
10Institute (NCI) designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center and
11is this state’s longest-established NCI-designated cancer
12center, and
13WHEREAS, NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers are
14recognized for their scientific excellence and leadership in the
15discovery and development of more effective approaches to cancer
16prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, which efforts attract top
17physicians and scientists from around the world to Moffitt
18Cancer Center, and
19WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center provides multidisciplinary
20care for the best outcomes to more than 100,000 unique patients
21with more than 700,000 outpatient visits from all 67 Florida
22counties, 50 states, and 133 countries, and
23WHEREAS, to accommodate patient growth and fulfill a
24critical need for increased outpatient services, expansions have
25included the opening of the Moffitt Cancer Center at
26International Plaza in 2011, Moffitt McKinley Outpatient Center
27in 2015, Moffitt McKinley Hospital in 2023, Moffitt at
28SouthShore in 2024, and the Speros Outpatient Center in 2026 as
29part of the expanding Speros research and innovation campus in
30Pasco County, and
31WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center has grown from 400 employees
32to more than 10,000 over the span of 40 years, and today has an
33economic impact of nearly $3 billion, and
34WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center annually trains more than
352,600 students, and
36WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center is a leader in breakthrough
37discoveries in basic, clinical, quantitative, and population
38science, and
39WHEREAS, Moffitt Cancer Center is committed to providing
40education, screening, and innovative treatments to reduce the
41cancer burden through collaborative efforts with partner
42organizations, continued use of mobile screening, and research
43to advance care and treatment options for patients, NOW,
44THEREFORE,

46Be It Resolved by the Senate of the State of Florida:

48That the Florida Senate recognizes and commends Moffitt
49Cancer Center on the occasion of its 40th anniversary and joins
50with Moffitt in its mission to contribute to the prevention and
51cure of cancer and to realize its vision to transform cancer
52care through cutting edge science, high quality clinical care,
53and novel partnerships.
