HOUSE CONCURRENT
RESOLUTION No. 2
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION urging the Indiana
Department of Transportation to rename that portion of U.S.
Highway 30 from mile marker 15 to mile marker 16 the
"Sergeant William Gilbert Paterson Memorial Mile".
Whereas, Sergeant William Gilbert Paterson was tragically
killed on January 25, 1994, in a two-vehicle accident during a
high-speed pursuit of a stolen vehicle as it entered into Lake
County from Porter County;
Whereas, Sergeant William Gilbert Paterson was born on
January 12, 1950, in Gary, Indiana, and he graduated from
Hobart High School in 1968, attending Indiana University
Northwest for three years afterwards;
Whereas, Sergeant Paterson was employed by the Lake
County Sheriff's Department for 18 years;
Whereas, Along with serving as a police officer, Sergeant
Paterson was a member of the United States Air Force Reserve
and the Lake Michigan Coast Guard Reserve, and he served in
Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm as a
member of the Unit PSU 303;
Whereas, Sergeant Paterson was thoroughly involved in his
community, where he attended Southlake Church of the
Nazarene and was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police
Chris Anton Lodge No. 125, the Lake County Police
Association Local #72, the Izaak Walton League, Miller
Chapter, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, and the
Experimental Aircraft Association;

Whereas, Sergeant Paterson is survived by his wife, son, two
daughters, two stepsons, his mother, and his brother; and
Whereas, Sergeant Paterson courageously made the ultimate
sacrifice in the line of duty, giving his life while selflessly
protecting his community: Therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
the Senate concurring:
SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly urges the
Indiana Department of Transportation to rename that portion of
U.S. Highway 30 from mile marker 15 to mile marker 16 the
"Sergeant William Gilbert Paterson Memorial Mile".
SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to the
Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation.
